The Only Thatched Roof in London
When the Globe was reconstructed, it was granted a special permit to have a thatched roof, making it the only building in London with one since the Great Fire of 1666. The original Globe tragically burned down in 1613 when a theatrical cannon misfired during a performance of Henry VIII, setting the thatch ablaze.
Today's roof is made from 6,000 bundles of water reeds from Norfolk, and it incorporates modern fire safety measures, including a sophisticated sprinkler system. This commitment to authenticity, balanced with modern safety, allows visitors to experience the theatre almost exactly as Shakespeare's audiences did over 400 years ago.
